Update: 8:36PM LASELEVU Village in Naitasiri was yesterday declared a Zero Tolerance Free Community with the full support of the community church.

Fiji's Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa said Laselevu was the first community in Fiji to have the full support of the church within the community.

The village received the Certificate of Declaration after completing the 10 phases of training under the Zero Tolerance on Violence Against Women and Children Community program.

"Violence against women and girls is one of the most prevalent forms of human rights violations in our country and yet one of the least talked about in our communities because it is often seen as a private matter between spouses or between family members," said Mrs Vuniwaqa.

"We need to actively discuss the abuse of women and girls within our churches, religious houses of worship, and in village and community meetings because violence against women and girls thrive in silence.

"The active participation of the vanua and particularly the church in this particular declaration is a step in the right direction."

A talanoa session was also held with the men and women of Laselevu community after the official declaration.
