THE Lautoka Rugby Union kicks off its franchise 15s concept today with the aim to select the best players to represent the Sugar City in the upcoming Fiji Rugby Union competition.

Six franchise teams will be involved in the round robin matches. Matches will start at the Nadovu Ground at 8.30am with the under-20 grade, followed by the development category starting at 10am and the senior category at 1pm.

Lautoka Rugby Union secretary Sefanaia Scholte said the winner after the round robin format would be handed a trophy which would be challenged by the other teams.

"So the competition is two phases with the round robin and challenge matches," Scholte said.

"The teams have recruited players from the Lautoka Rugby Union clubs within their vicinity. It will be all 80 minute games. The selectors will be scouting for talents in all games.

"Lautoka has lost many of its experienced players in recent years. Some have secured overseas contracts while some have moved to other unions because of work commitments.

"So we have been on a rebuilding phase. This year we hope to build good combinations focusing on all the grades."

In the senior matches, City Steelers will face Sukanacagi Crusaders at 1pm, Vuda Giants will play Rebels at 2.30pm while Force will tackle the Knights at 4pm.
