Cakaudrove starts early

THE 2018 Cakaudrove Rugby Union (CRU) season will officially kick off with their version of Super Rugby competition next week at the Ratu Ganilau Park in Savusavu.

CRU head coach Rayne Simpson said four franchises representing each of the tikina in Cakaudrove would compete.

Simpson said this would serve as a selection process for players to be selected into the Cakaudrove squad for season 2018.

"Since the end of the 2017 Vodafone Vanua Championship season, Cakaudrove Rugby Union has worked together with the Roko Tui Cakaudrove, local police and various tikina to develop and prepare a long-term rugby development plan for the province," Simpson said.

"The plan aims to encourage and support local rugby competitions within villages throughout the province and will culminate in a Super Rugby competition comprising of teams from a combination of tikina across Cakaudrove.

"We are excited about the prospect of seeing the players in action in the Super Rugby competition as this is the first time in many years where the entire vanua has been united to support rugby development in the North.

"It is critical that we engage all tikina across Cakaudrove in order to provide an opportunity for young men to participate in rugby programs and to be able to select the best talent for the CRU teams competing in the Vodafone Vanua Championship.

Simpson said the Fiji Rugby Union recently released the draw for the 2018 Vodafone Vanua Championship and CRU would host four home games and travel for three away games, with one away game being hosted in Bua.

"CRU's opening match is on Saturday April 14 against Naitasiri Bulls at Ratu Ganilau Park, Savusavu commencing at 1pm with the U20 match followed by the senior match at 3pm," he said.

"News and details of the CRU competition preparations, camps, trial matches, social activities and competition match results can be found on the Cakaudrove Rugby Union Facebook page."
