GIZ, government plan for village relocation

THE German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) is working with the Fijian Government to relocate a village on Kadavu to higher grounds.

This was revealed by Christine Fung, the land use planning and facilitation specialist and deputy team leader for GIZ's coping with climate change in the Pacific Island region program, during the national adaptation plan (NAP) global network meeting in Nadi yesterday.

"On behalf of the German government, we are working with the village of Narikoso on the island of Ono, Kadavu, to plan and support the relocation of families to higher, safer grounds," she said.

"Climate change is one of the most significant challenges we face today.

"This challenge is especially acute in Pacific Island states, where sea level rise and extreme weather events can mean a loss of not just livelihoods, but also of homes, cultural identity and disruption of social structures."

She said about 60 communities in Fiji would need to be relocated largely because of the present dwelling areas becoming uninhabitable and unsafe. This was a result of frequent inundation or land loss from fast eroding coastlines. "The GIZ program, in close consultation with stakeholders and government agencies and led by the Ministry of Economy, is supporting the development of a national relocation guideline that is currently being drafted.

"The guideline serves to ensure that any relocation process would ensure sustainable development and a human rights-based approach is followed.

"The scale of climate change impacts on communities like Narikoso may seem overwhelming but through well co-ordinated and inclusive planning processes, countries are making progress towards resilience."
