Manasa Kalouniviti
Saturday, February 10, 2018

WE need to consider the economic value of our resources, the domestic needs and how to derive economic benefits for the resource owners, industries and our economy.

Ministry of Forests acting permanent secretary Bernadette Welch made the comment while opening the half-day forest industry and exporters consultation at the Holiday Inn Suva on Thursday.

Ms Welch said the consultation was carried out to discuss industry and exporter concerns on export restrictions, requirements and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA).

"And any other pertinent issue regarding both environment and forest regulations which may need clarification.

"Any environmental activity we do within natural resource areas needs consideration on the long-term impacts, availability of these resources and the environmental services it offers for future generations," she said

Minister for Forests Osea Naiqamu, who was present at the workshop, said the consultation was important so that everyone understood the various processes and legislations that was in place for the forest sector.

"I had decided to bring everyone together to discuss issues that need immediate attention. This is a great start and there will be many more consultations in the near future".
