Saturday, February 10, 2018

A MAN who died after his partner allegedly set him alight suffered second and third degree burns, the High Court in Suva was told yesterday.

Marianne Premila Devi is charged with one count of murder for the death of her defacto partner, Bal Krishna Naidu.

She appeared before judge Justice Salesi Temo yesterday. The alleged offence happened at Sakoca in Tamavua in November 2016.

While highlighting the prosecution's case theory to the court yesterday, State counsel Eoghn Samisoni said on November 17, 2016, the accused allegedly threw a bowl of kerosene at the man before setting him alight with a piece of newspaper she had rolled up.

Mr Samisoni said the man received extensive burns on his body and asked for help from neighbours during the time of the alleged incident.

He also revealed in court that the man received 80 per cent burns and the accused intended to cause the man's death.

Mr Samisoni confirmed there were partial admissions in the accused's caution interview which was one of the evidences that the prosecution would be relying on.

The defence instead said they would need to first review the prosecution's case theory.

Ms Devi has been further remanded in custody. She will reappear in court on March 23.

Her trial date has also been set from June 4 to June 8.
