'National adaptation planning processes crucial'

IMPROVING donor co-ordination is a way to ensure partner countries are able to better navigate climate change adaptation programs that are available.

This was the sentiment shared by German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) Fijian representative Christine Fung during the national adaptation plan (NAP) global network meeting in Nadi on Thursday.

Ms Fung is the land use planning and facilitation specialist and deputy team leader for GIZ's coping with Climate Change in the Pacific Island region program.

She said donor co-ordination would allow countries to access funding needed to develop and implement adaptation actions.

"Germany is pleased to be working with donor countries like the United States, Canada and Australia to do this," she said.

"The large majority of countries chose to include an adaptation component in their nationally determined contributions or NDCs. Germany is also providing support in order to link and align these NDC adaptation components with the NAP process so these two processes can be complementary and mutually reinforcing."

Ms Fung said the threats of climate change, especially rapidly rising sea levels, changing rainfall patterns and an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, were real.

"Our societies need to adapt now. A crucial step that countries are taking to prepare for these threats is to realise national adaptation planning processes and start implementing the resulting national adaptation plans."
