Mission to live healthy

THE Ministry of Health and Medical Services is working with Methodist Women's Fellowship to fight non-communicable diseases by advising members to eat and live healthy to avoid visiting the hospital.

NCDs national adviser Doctor Isimeli Tukana, who was at the Methodist Women's Fellowship 70th anniversary celebration in Savusavu yesterday, said they were at the celebration to promote healthy living and highlight the importance of hygiene to the women.

"There is a need for people to check their blood every year because smoking, low nutrition, alcohol and lack of physical activity can change the chemistry of blood," he said.

"So the solution to wellness is to control your weight, control your salt, eat more fruits and vegetables, and stay active. There is no medicine for this, I can only advise, but I can't move you because you have to do it yourself and it starts from home."

Dr Tukana said when primary health care first came to Fiji, they worked closely with the Soqosoqo Vakamarama.

"They were our biggest partners in promoting healthy living," he said.

"Today, we are also celebrating primary health care day and we thank the Soqosoqo Vakamarama for their help, because our work is made easier with their assistance."

Dr Tukana said they needed to educate women about NCDs.

"NCDs are lifestyle diseases, it first starts from pregnancy and women need to be more educated about the food they eat and the food they feed their families with," he said.

"There were no NCDs in 1948 because people ate healthy and I believe that we have to have a balanced attitude towards NCDs and when I say balance it means to have a healthy way of living and be spiritual at the same time, because all this works well together."

Dr Tukana said women needed to be educated about NCDs so they could promote healthy living at home.

"Hospital is not the solution to NCDs, the solution is right at home and we need to go 70 years back when there were no NCDs and when people resorted to healthy food and prayers."
