THE Methodist Women's Fellowship 70th anniversary celebration livened the quiet atmosphere of Savusavu when about 2000 women marched from Yaroi Village to Ratu Ganilau Park yesterday.

The church's women's department secretary, Salanieta Naucabalavu, said the historic event attracted a large turnout despite the rain and soggy ground.

She said there were 22,000 members of the Methodist Women's Fellowship.

Ms Naucabalavu said their main aim was to educate stakeholders, especially men, to respect women in the society.

"All this could be done through prayers and working together in unity despite our differences," she said.

"We've come a long way and today shows the fruits of all those humble beginnings, which also meant that women are now recognised widely in church and in the society."

Ms Naucabalavu said their voices were now heard in church.

"We believe that working together in unity and as members of the women's fellowship, we will be able to build a better Fiji for all," she said.

"Prayers work wonders and that is exactly why we are here today, to celebrate the good work of all those women who have started this fellowship before us.

"We also have plans to give in our contribution towards our hostel, which will be located in Toorak but that's a long-time plan," she said.

"We have five years to work on that plan but for now, we have started working on collecting our contribution for the hostel."

The fellowship started in 1948 at the Naqelekula Mission Compound in Savusavu.
