Winston pushes Luisa to the top

IT was a proud moment for Maikeli Tukana when his youngest daughter, Luisa Teresia, was badged the head girl of Qalivakabau District School on Koro Island yesterday.

About two years ago, the youngest of four siblings clung to her father when tidal waves crashed on to Naqaidamu Village on Koro at the height of Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston.

"My father told me to hold on to him tightly as he we swam for safety. I was scared and thought we were going to die," she said

Mr Tukana said: "I told her 'God will guide and protect us and he will take us through. This is a God of miracles'."

The experiences of February 20, 2016, on the island and struggles they went through on a daily basis pushed the 13-year-old to strive for success.

"I would like to be a flight attendant because I would like to travel the world. I hope to further my studies at Adi Cakobau School next year," she said.

Mr Tukana said: "I remember last year I told her 'I want you to work hard and become the head girl'. When I was told early this year that she was appointed, I was happy for my baby girl."

In his sermon during the school's prefects' induction, church steward Jeremaia Gasau said one needed love, humility and respect to be a good leader.

The school has a school roll of 98 students and six teachers.

The school accommodates children of Sinuvaca, Namacu and Naqaidamu villages.
