System turns into a cyclone

TROPICAL depression 07F intensified into a Category 1 tropical cyclone on Thursday night.

The system, which has been named TC Gita, lay to the far north-east of Vanua Levu at 4pm yesterday.

Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS) director Ravind Kumar said the system had continued to intensify since Thursday and attained Category 1 status.

"It was located about 375 kilometres west of Apia, Samoa, and is moving east-northeast at about 30 kilometres per hour and may further intensify," he said.

Mr Kumar said another system, tropical depression 08F, had started to trek back towards the country. Earlier this week, TD08F was moving southwards away from the Fiji Group.

He said trough, cloud and rain associated with TD08F continued to affect the country.

"TD08F was located near about 135 kilometres southeast of Kadavu or 90km southwest of Matuku at 4pm today (yesterday) and is expected to affect the group until Sunday.

"The chance of flashflooding and flooding of low-lying areas still remains high in areas of localised heavy falls, especially where the ground is very saturated and more rain is predicted.

"The weather will be closely monitored through the weekend for any changes in the situation."
