Depression now TC Gita

Update: 8:21PM TROPICAL depression 07F is now a Category 1 tropical cyclone named Gita which intensified over Thursday night to the far northeast of Vanua Levu.

Fiji Meteorological Services (FMS) director Ravind Kumar told the media TD07F had continued to intensify yesterday into a Category 1 status.

TC Gita was named early following a request from the Pagopago (American Samoa) Meteorological Service according to the 7.30pm special weather bulletin from Nadi tonight.

"Tropical Cyclone Gita centre 992HPA was located near 14.4S 175.2W at 9am today," the bulletin said.

The cyclone has maximum of 10minute winds of up to 35 knots near its centre

The cyclone is expected to intensify overnight moving south east at 11 knots with 50 knot winds close to the centre on its east north east path away from Fiji.

The Nadi weather office asks that all vessels sailing 300 nautical miles from the centre of the cyclone send three hourly reports to the RSMC.

Meanwhile a flood alert is in force for the low lying areas, small streams of eastern and southern Viti Levu.

Note that a high tide of up to 1.67metres is expected at 2.42am.

The next special weather bulletin is expected at 10.30pm tonight.
