Maikeli Seru In Hamilton, New Zealand
Monday, February 05, 2018

FIJI Airways Fiji 7s coach Gareth Baber turned emotional last night in New Zealand after his gallant warriors penciled another 7s record by winning the inaugural Hamilton 7s.

Fiji came from behind to snatch a 24-17 win against South Africa to force its way into third position in the ongoing HSBC Word Rugby Sevens Series.

"It was about being brave and taking risks that resulted in the win tonight and I thank the boys for that," Baber said.

Fiji snatched victory from the Blitzbokke who led 15-5 at the break.

But it was two off-loads from Kalione Nasoko to speedster Alosio Naduva that saw Fijian fans erupt and the noble blue banner blue dominate Hamilton in the rest of the final.

The off-loads resulted in two tries and the game was sealed with another try from Eroni Sau to see Fiji win 24-17.

"It's no myth, it's no legend, it's about hard work and getting things right," Baber said.

"We will have down periods again. We have won a tournament but reality is unless I have won eight tournaments then we will have critics. That's the nature of being a coach because people don't agree with the way you play."

Baber gave special praise to Naduva who he said worked above his capacity and dedicated the win to Fijian supporters across the globe. "We do it in the name of the players, the supporters, in the name of the nation and of God as well. The players know how passionate the fans are back in Fiji and around the world. We will die putting our game because we represent Fiji."
