Project aims to provide safe drinking water

THE commissioning of the Vuadomo Water Rural Project is part of Government's ongoing efforts to provide safe drinking water to 36,458 Fijians in 178 villages, schools and settlements in the 2017 and 2018 financial year.

While opening the project at Vuadomo in Savusavu on Tuesday, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama said to deliver this strategy, Government allocated $27.3 million for the initiative.

"I have been advised that the project cost $146,000 and will benefit at least 150 individuals and 23 households," said Mr Bainimarama.

"I also understand that this is a boost to the village given that the existing water system was built in the 1970s with only three stand pipes shared by villagers.

"From this initiative, regular and abundant water will be available to families at any point in time because they will now have direct access to the water system.

"Government's only humble plea is for the community to take proper care and usage of the water system's infrastructure."

Mr Bainimarama encouraged members of the community to develop a proper maintenance program so investment in the water system was sustainable.

"This project is aligned to the development priorities pursued globally, particularly the sustainable development goal number six that involves clean water and sanitation," he said.

"With respect to Fiji's development priorities, the recently launched 20-year national development plan targets the provision of 100 per cent access to clean and safe water for the rural and maritime islands by 2030."
