7s newcomers keen to impress

DEBUTANTS Apete Daveta and Vasikali Mudu are keen to make the country proud when they represent the Fiji Airways national men's team at the World Rugby HSBC Sydney 7s, which kicks off in Australia on Friday.

The duo, who are part of the Nadroga squad, are making their transition from 15s rugby to the abbreviated code.

They were scouted by Fiji 7s head coach Gareth Baber after their sterling performance for the Fiji Drua in the National Rugby Championship.

Daveta, who hails from the village of Nadroumai in Nadroga, was inspired by fellow villager and All Blacks rep Waisake Naholo who advised him to play well to achieve a lot of things on offer in the sport.

The 24-year-old said he never thought of coming this far in his rugby career — to be given a chance to don the national 7s jumper.

"I did not dream to come this far," he said.

"I was more into 15s but was caught by surprise to get called into the 7s squad. Now I hope to play more and give my best for the country. There has been a lot of competition in the team.

"So I have a target to work on my defence and attack. I talk a lot with the players on the field, which I believe is the best for the team," Daveta said.

Mudu, who hails from Naitasiri, has been playing rugby since his school days. He was part of Nadi's Ratu Navula College team that defeated Tailevu North's Queen Victoria School in the 2013 Deans Trophy final.
