Crossings closed, hundreds affected

THREE crossings in Rakiraki are still closed after the heavy rain in the Western Division last week.

The Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) said the affected crossings were: Burelevu crossing on Nailuva Rd; Savusavu crossing on Dawa Lawaki Rd; and Lau Fort crossing on Lau Rd.

The temporary inaccessible crossings have affected hundreds from Nasau, Nailuva and Lawaki districts, says Nasukamai Village headman Jemesa Qeqe.

"This has happened over four times before and the authorities should look into making a new crossing instead of a temporary one because it will be washed away again," he said.

He said more than 100 people had been affected.

The Fiji Roads Authority said its contractor Higgins was waiting for floodwaters to recede before it could restore the temporary crossings.
