Borehole ends water problems for villagers

EIGHTY-TWO-YEAR-OLD Emosi Maru was among villagers who celebrated after witnessing the commissioning of their new village borehole yesterday.

The traditional head of the Levuka clan in Nasaisaivua, Kubulau, Bua, said it was a joyous day for the 62 villagers under his leadership.

Mr Maru said villagers had gone through a lot of hardships in the past to get clean drinking water.

An emotional Mr Maru said the only water source in the village originated from the hills behind the village.

"During heavy rain and drought the village always faces difficulties as water supply would stop," he said.

"Villagers have to wait for low tide to get water from springs at the shoreline.

"Our women used to get water from seawater pools in order to access clean water for cleaning, cooking and washing.

"With a backup system like the borehole these hardships would be a thing of the past now."

Mr Maru said he was the happiest man in the village knowing that his people would now have a secure water source during emergencies in the future.

Meanwhile village headman Waisake Bukayaro said two households in the village would share a backup tap from the borehole commissioned by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday.

Mr Bukayaro said the village had a population of 62 who would benefit from the project.
