The Iron Lady

SAI Vulawalu Ledua did not look like the 'Iron Lady' yesterday, a nickname she has earned for her tough but celebrated leadership style.

A reluctant hero of the ATS impasse, the president of the Federated Staff Association broke down and wept openly during a thanksgiving church service yesterday.

"Sometimes I get a bit embarrassed about the tag 'Iron Lady', but when I think about those words, it brings to mind some of the women unionists of the past who also earned that nickname," she said.

"I am very honoured and blessed to have been part of something that became a blessing for other workers in this country."

She said since taking up office 12 months ago, she knew that fighting for the shareholders of the company was a priority because she had worked for the company for more than 20 years.

"I know for a fact that ATS is a family company.

"We had our differences with the company and I knew that the issues of the past 11 years had to be addressed."

Mrs Ledua said the past month became a humbling experience and only succeeded because of divine intervention.

"We only have God to thank for being our source of strength and for bringing people together over the past 35 days.

"He was there from the beginning and His love never failed us."
