Couple ready to work

NEW parents Ruth Ingham and Tristan Traill have been on an emotional roller-coaster for the past 35 days.

The Air Terminal Services workers had just welcomed their son, Kevin Gideon Ono Traill, three months before the events of December 16, 2017.

The couple said they were ready to return to work today and were happy with the Employment Relations Tribunal's decision last Saturday that their company allow them and more than 200 of their colleagues back to work.

"I was about one month back from maternity leave when December 16 happened and we were one of the few that took a stand to fight for what we believed in," said Ms Ingham.

"The journey has been an emotional roller-coaster. I spent most of the (36) days at home because we couldn't afford a babysitter."

She said her husband spent his days at the 'drain station' and would return home with news of the lockout.

"I admit I got worried having been a first time mum and having financial commitments, but then the overwhelming support that we got from the public, the churches, the vanua, the politicians, artists and even (Waisale) Serevi, told me we were doing something right.

"They brought encouragement through their support and helped us remain united and strong."

Mr Traill said worrying about his family's welfare had been a challenge.

"The more we waited, the more worries crept in," he said.

"But then we realised this was not only our fight as ATS workers, but also for every worker in Fiji.

"The support we had was very encouraging and one thing we will always treasure and never take for granted is the love of our families and friends. They stood by us throughout."
