Pay clarity

Mere Naleba
Saturday, January 20, 2018

PRIME Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has clarified he is only paid for one of the four portfolios he holds.

Mr Bainimarama said claims made by certain members of Parliament that he was earning a salary of $3.2 million a year was not true.

"A member of Parliament has put in his Facebook that I have about five portfolios and I get paid about $3.2 million. I wish," Mr Bainimarama said when presenting new chairs, desks, tables and computers worth $130,000 to the Christian Mission Fellowship College in Nasinu, yesterday.

He said it was unfortunate that a member of Parliament went around spreading lies and it was people such as these who were misleading members of the public.

He said ministers might hold several portfolios, but they received the salary of only one portfolio.

He said the reason behind ministers holding several portfolios was to decrease the number of ministers.

Mr Bainimarama is the Minister for iTaukei Affairs, Sugar and Foreign Affairs.
