THE Department of Social Welfare has expressed its disappointment over the release of confidential information of a minor who gave birth at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) in Suva on Monday.

Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation permanent secretary Dr Josefa Koroivueta confirmed they were aware of the case, but keeping the interest and the rights of the child was their main priority.

"We are looking at it from the side of confidentiality and also protection of the child. It somewhat concerned us, and in fact it was an absolute disappointment that it's gone in the media," Dr Koroivueta said.

The Reproductive and Family Health Association of Fiji (RFHAF) posted an online appeal on Tuesday night asking the public to donate blood to the minor because she was in dire need of A positive blood type.

The online appeal revealed some confidential information about the minor.

CWM Hospital's consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Dr James Fong also expressed frustration about the revelation of the minor's information saying it was "stupid".

He refuted the appeal for the blood type, confirming the minor never needed any blood transfusion.

"I am just a little bit worried because I do not want this case to become a big media circus. We are worried because of her confidentiality," Dr Fong said.

"We're trying to control this because of her confidentiality, because now she's going to go back home and everybody's going to be talking about her."

RFHAF executive director Matelita Seva-Cadravula yesterday claimed they posted the appeal after a request from the relevant authorities.

"If you look at the message, we were actually contacted by the (CWMH) blood bank. They always send out messages because they need people to donate blood. Our communications person received the message from the blood bank asking and giving those details," Ms Seva-Cadravula said.
