Fiji NSWRL bid team receive endorsement

Thursday, January 18, 2018

Update: 3:31PM THERE is confirmation that the Fiji National Rugby League (FNRL) board has endorsed the Fiji NSWRL Bid team to establish a full-time rugby league club based right here in the Pacific island nation.

Bid coordinator and former Queenslander Petero Civoniceva made the confirmation as he thanked the FNRL board for its correspondence of endorsement sent to him and the New South Wales Rugby League Board a week ago.

Civoniceva said that they would be making a joint formal statement with the FNRL in the next few days.

"I would like to take this opportunity, however, to say thank you to all our fans from across the world for your patience. My team and I are gearing towards what is inevitably going to be a fantastic year ahead," he said.

The Fiji NSWRL Bid had had three years of work, fours years of planning to establish the full-time club, which now has NRL - National Rugby League, New South Wales Rugby League and Intrust Super Premiership NSW, Fijian Government, Fiji National Sports Commission and the Fiji Sports Council approval and support that culminated in a visit from the NSWRL last month.

Civoniceva had earlier said that their bid was the only bid that was in talks, supported and endorsed by the NSWRL - including General Manager Barrie-Jon Mather, CEO David Trodden, and executive Robert Millward.

He had said that the only element stopping a historic Fiji franchise in the NRL's professional tiers was the final endorsement by the FNRL.
