Expect hot, humid weather in coming days

EXPECT hot and humid conditions to prevail in the coming days, says Fiji Meteorological Service director Ravind Kumar.

He said the trough that affected Fiji this week had moved to the south-west of the country and associated cloud and showers now affected southern Lau, Kadavu and nearby smaller islands.

Mr Kumar said the heavy rain alert in force for Viti Levu, Yasawa and Mamanuca Group, Vanua Levu, Taveuni and nearby smaller islands, northern Lau and Lomaiviti Group was cancelled.

The flood alert in force for all low-lying areas, small streams and areas adjacent to major rivers for Viti Levu was now cancelled as well.

"Some showers in the eastern and interior of larger islands while elsewhere, showers in the afternoon or evening are expected tomorrow (today).

"Isolated thunderstorms and heavy falls are likely."

Mr Kumar said while river levels receded slowly, there were some tidal influences that could cause back flow and inundate low lying areas.

"With the ground already saturated, isolated heavy rainfall may trigger flash flooding, therefore communities are advised to remain alert. As we are the in middle of the wet season, unexpected heavy rainfall can be anticipated from time to time.

"With the moisture around and heating in the morning, expect hot and humid conditions to prevail in the coming days with daytime temperature rising to mid-thirties in some places. Members of the public are advised to keep hydrated and minimise exposure to the heat."
