Ill will aside

Social Democratic Liberal Party (SODELPA) leader Sitiveni Rabuka is prepared to put personal differences aside and contest the 2018 poll with Opposition Leader Ro Teimumu Kepa if she enters the election on the party's ticket.

Mr Rabuka's stance comes after confirmation by Ro Teimumu that she will contest this year's general election. He said even though some candidates did not see eye to eye with him, he was ready to put "personal differences" aside for the party.

"It's pretty straightforward," Mr Rabuka said.

"There are other candidates who do not see eye to eye with me on certain issues, but we are one party. Our personal differences are put aside. We are members of one party."

Mr Rabuka said while the deadline for the party's candidates' expressions of interest had closed, Ro Teimumu still had a chance to apply.

"There is an understanding that the candidate for Rewa has not been received, nobody has applied for the Rewa seat - geographic - even though it's all national constituencies.

"And there is an understanding with her (Ro Teimumu) that would be finalised with her, between her and her vanua and whoever they propose would have to go through the process.

"If she is the one that the vanua has supported, because they will have to campaign for her, then she just puts in her notification that she has been okayed and then she goes through the interview process."

Mr Rabuka said Ro Teimumu had not indicated her decision to apply to the party as yet.

Ro Teimumu said eight chiefs from Rewa and the Tui Suva, Sanaila Mudunavosa, made a submission to her on Tuesday requesting her to contest the elections for her people.

She said she agreed to the submissions by the chiefs because they had supported her since 2006.

Ro Teimumu remained tightlipped when questioned on whether she would change her political party and only offered to say that she had processes to follow.

In June last year, Ro Teimumu announced she would not contest SODELPA's leadership and called it a day after being at the helm of the party for seven years.
