Vocea calls for flood vigilance

NO major reports of flooding were recorded in the North despite days of heavy downpour because of a low pressure system over the country.

Commissioner Northern Jovesa Vocea said the North was fortunate in the sense that there were no major reports of flooding or communities being affected.

However, he has called on parents to be vigilant over the whereabouts of their children and to ensure they keep away from drains and streams.

"We have started the first week of school for this year and we are asking our parents to closely supervise their children and keep them safe as we encounter rainy days," Mr Vocea said.

"Those living in flood-prone areas are to take necessary action when the need arises. Right now we have not set up an emergency team, but we are continuously monitoring the weather situation."

Mr Vocea said his team compiled daily reports which were sent to the National Disaster Management office.

Yesterday, the Meteorological Department stated that a heavy rain warning remained in force for Viti Levu and Vanua Levu.

For Labasa occasional showers and heavy at times with few thunderstorms are expected today and tomorrow.

For Savusavu occasional showers, heavy at times and few thunderstorms as well until tomorrow.
