Policy to address job issues

THE Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations Ministry conducted its final national consultation on its National Employment Policy (NEP) at the Albert Park pavilion conference room in Suva yesterday.

Ministry's permanent secretary Salaseini Daunabuna said this would be the first NEP for Fiji.

"From the ministry's perspective it's really the broad policy framework that will address employment issues in the country," Ms Daunabuna said.

"We have noted that with the youth unemployment rate being at 18 per cent, one of the policy priority areas is creating employment pathway from education into proactive employment for the youths.

"The National Employment Policy is really coming out of our obligation, under the Employment Policy Convention. We have drafted our National Employment Policy which we have taken out to the public for consultation.

"We started off with our consultation from December right through January."

Ms Daunabuna said the team identified a lot of feedback and comments from members of the public who were helpful.

"Generally, we've got 10 policy priority areas that are in line with the employment needs of the country, not only now, but when we look into the future and what the future work will look like for us as a country," she said.

"This was put together with the assistance from the International Labour Organization (ILO). We also have a technical committee which had put together the document and now is the time for the public to give their feedback on the policy.

"So whatever points are raised during our national consultation, the individual points will be taken into consideration when we finalise the document."
