Ministry investigates use of education grant

Litia Cava
Wednesday, January 17, 2018

EDUCATION Ministry permanent secretary Iowane Tiko said the ministry was investigating schools with privatised principals in relation to the education grant.

He made these comments in response to a question raised by this newspaper during an interview on the exact amount of the free education grant that was allegedly misused in the past financial year.

"We haven't finally audited everything. Some are still with our auditing team as we speak," Mr Tiko said.

"The schools with privatised principals, we are investigating them thoroughly."

Mr Tiko said only four auditors were available in the ministry and they audited 730 primary schools and 169 secondary schools.

"If we run short of people then we call for people from the Ministry of Economy, but we need to correspond well with the auditors at the Ministry of Economy so that if they are readily available, we can dispatch them in numbers and schools can be checked thoroughly so we could detect abuse earlier before it gets worse."

He said about 15 to 20 schools had their grant centralised last year.
