Forbes ready for 7s festival

FORMER New Zealand 7s captain Derek Jamie Forbes commonly known as DJ Forbes rates 2018 as an exciting year for the abbreviated code with the staging of three major events being the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, Commonwealth Games and Rugby World Cup 7s.

Regarded as one of the most hated New Zealand players when on the field against Fiji, Forbes arrived in a delayed Fiji Airways flight from Auckland last night receiving overwhelming support at Nadi Airport. He was mobbed for photographs at the arrival concourse. Forbes is one of the ambassadors for the Mana Whey Fiji Coral Coast 7s at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka this week.

"I like to think I was the most loved and hated man, but Fijians are such awesome people they always treat us, me and my family with so much respect," Forbes said.

"I have been here a couple of times and people stop me in the streets just to take photos and autographs. But I think that is the beauty of 7s rugby. New Zealand and Fiji have had a lot of rivalry. I know that many Fijians will tell me that they hate me when we play against each other but they also love me for what I have done for the New Zealand rugby."
