LABASA lifted its third Pillay Garments Champion Vs Champion (CVC) title after upsetting Lautoka 1-0 in the second leg at Churchill Park on Friday night.

The Babasiga Lions walked away $5000 richer wining the series 1-0 on aggregate after the first match ended in a nil-all draw at Subrail Park last weekend. Labasa stunned the star-studded Blues finishing the match with nine players after Ilisoni Logaivou and Ashnil Raju were sent off in the second spell.

Labasa Football Association president Riyaz Khan applauded the effort of his players.

He said they knew that Lautoka would be hard to beat at its home ground.

"I congratulate the players for their hard work," Khan said.

"I have a special praise for my defenders who worked overtime with nine players.

"We should have wrapped up the match at Subrail Park having missed a lot of goal scoring chances, but overall, we showed here that we wanted to win.

"We took our chances which what mattered at the end. This is a good start for the season because we will be playing twice in the Vodafone Premier League at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori next week."

Lautoka coach Kamal Swamy was gracious in defeat and congratulated the opposition.

"We maintained possession, but football is not only about maintaining, it is more than that," Swamy said.

"Scoring the goal is what matters and that is what separated the two teams at the end. We have a lot to work to do since we are playing in the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Champions League."

The Blues settled for $2500.
