Rodu wants more improvement

FIJI women's football coach Marika Rodu believes women's competitions needs to be taken seriously by participating teams.

He said players did not take the sport seriously.

He watched the Southern Zone Vodafone Women's League yesterday at the Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) Academy ground in Vatuwaqa, Suva.

"The girls need to take this seriously," Rodu said.

"The way I see this, the element of training is not there. Just on game day, some teams gather to come and play. It defeats the purpose of development because the chunk of development is done during training sessions.

"When I watch the games, I can identify and conclude that some teams train and some do not."

Rodu, who coached the Fiji women's side to a silver medal finish at the recent Pacific Games in Vanuatu, said this was one area that needed improvement.

"The mini games was an eye-opener. Some girls performed above expectations, some girls needed more training, it is difficult to get girls here as first you have to train them.

"We have to change the mind-set of players. They come to the national camp to train to compete, not when they come to national team then we start all over. This is what we need to take to the districts to train them to train," he said.

Meanwhile, yesterday's results, Lami defeated Nasinu 3-0 and Rewa beat Navua 4-1. Tailevu-Naitasiri beat Suva 4-1 in the last match.
