BASEBALL Fiji will compete for the first time in the under-15 Oceania Championship in New Zealand.

The winner of the championship will represent the Oceania at the 2018 Baseball U15 World Cup in Panama.

The Fiji team departs for NZ tomorrow as the championship will be played from January 18-21 in Auckland.

Fiji Baseball development officer Inoke Niubalavu said the trip would be a learning experience for his young players.

"This is first time for Fiji to send a team and the first time for us to compete," Niubalavu said.

Niubalavu said the players were selected through development programs organised for local players.

"They have been playing for five years under our community development programs.

"That's how we selected the players," he said.

New Zealand, Australia , New Caledonia and Fiji will be part of the U15 qualifiers which will be played at Auckland's Lloyd Elsmore Park in Pakuranga.
