Lautoka in the hunt

LAUTOKA rugby team coach Osea Umuumulovo is looking for new players for the 2018 season.

Umuumulovo, the new maroons coach, has laid down his plans to get the Sugar City-based team back to Fiji Rugby Union major union competition.

He wants Lautoka to play in the annual Skipper Cup and HFC Bank Farebrother Trophy competitions.

"Lautoka is playing in the B Division and I am trying to get them back to major union.

"It is going to be a big challenge for me," he said.

"We had started our off-season training as I try to scout new and young talents and we are trying a franchise competition.

"We get 36 clubs and try to group them into a group of six clubs.

"This way we can pick the best players to represent Lautoka. This will make the competition tough and it will give a lot of game time to our players.

"Lautoka has what it takes to go up again and face other big teams, but I think petty politics is the reason for its downfall."

Osea said more rugby clinics would help officials identify talents and help players achieve their goal.

"During the clinics, we can get talents that we have never seen. It helps us coaches to know the players and provide a pathway for them," the former national U20 coach said.
