Thousands of people from all walks of life brought Nadi Town to a standstill yesterday when they marched in support for the more than 200 Air Terminal Services workers, who have not been working for 28 days, because of a dispute with their management.

The incident free event which drew cheers from shop assistants and families who were in town for last minute back to school shopping and also generated a lot of interest on social media.

A live video feed on The Fiji Times online Facebook page of speeches made at the end of the march at Nadi District School immediately registered 62,735 thousand views as at 6pm yesterday.

The march, which began from the Sigatoka end of the Nadi Town, was led by 66-year-old, Rodwell Campbell, one of the founders of ATS.

Walking alongside him were Felix Anthony and Daniel Urai from the Fiji Trades Union Congress, Attar Singh from the Fiji Islands Council of Trade Unions, Rajeshwar Singh from the Confederation of Public Sector Unions, Agni Deo Singh from the Fiji Teachers Union and Sai Vulawalu Ledua from the Federated Airline Staff Association.

Also marching in support were representatives from 32 unions — 26 FTUC affiliates and 6 from FICTU affiliates.

FASA national secretary Vilikesa Naulumatua said the support shown by union affiliates, the vanua, churches and the public had been nothing short of overwhelming.

"We never expected it to be anything like this and we would like to thank everyone who turned up, the people who expressed support via social media and those who have stopped by the camp to bless us financially or through the donations of food and sharing of prayers," he said.
