$1k grant monitored

GOVERNMENT'S $1000 small and medium enterprise grant scheme is being closely monitored to ensure it benefits recipients, says Ministry of Industry and Trade chief economist Sekove Tamanitoakula.

Speaking to participants at the draft National Employment Policy consultation in Sigatoka yesterday, he said people needed to be aware of how the grants were given and monitored.

"I think there is a big misconception in terms of the $1000 SME grants that anyone who applies will get it," he said.

"There is a rating system in place and we assess all the applications against the points system and one of the big factors that influences whether the applicant is successful or not is that the applicant must have attended a recognised training program from one of several training providers.

"We also do follow up training with recipients."

Mr Tamanitoakula said of the 17,970 recipients, 10,764 were males and 7211 were female.

He also said 10,855 recipients lived in rural areas and 7115 in urban areas.

Government has spent $17.4million on the scheme so far.
