PATIENTS visiting the Madras Institute of Orthopedics and Traumatology (MIOT) Pacific Hospitals in Suva are taking advantage of the new state of art revolution sound 750 HD computed tomography (CT) scanner.

MIOT Pacific Hospitals consultant radiologist Dr Sivaraman Ramalingam said they conducted about 20 scans per day for patients who were referred for the procedure by their doctors.

Dr Ramalingam said the new scanner was able to diagnose brain and blood vessels throughout the body .

"Patients who come in for chest pains or any injuries throughout their body can be scanned and diagnosed," Dr Ramalingam said.

He added the scans were done in few minutes and the reports were available within hours to the doctors.

"People don't have to wait in queues and weeks for scan results.

"This is just one of the many advantages of this machine," he said.

He mentioned another important feature of the scanner was that it provided an ultra-low dose of radiation compared with a normal scanner.

"What happens is when we scan the brain, the eyes receive very little radiation because of the new technology," he said.

"This also applies to when we scan the chest, the breasts also receive very little radiation allowing the patient to feel safer."

He said the machine was also used in metal artefact reduction for knee and hip replacements.

He stated the scanner had the capabilities of diagnosing all forms of cancer.

"It helps us to provide pre and post cancer treatments to the patients.

"We can change the drugs prescribed to these patients depending on the scan results after their treatments," he said.

Prices vary from $300-$500 depending on the organs scanned.
