THERE are a lot of people suffering from bowel cancers and obesity in the country.

These were the sentiments shared by renowned surgeon from India Dr Karthik Maruthachalam, who is in the country conducting consultations at the MIOT Pacific Hospital in Suva.

Dr Maruthachalam, a surgical gastroenterologist, said about 50 per cent of the population was obese and it was his aim to provide gastroenterology and cancer services to the patients.

"Common problem in Fiji is that people have gastric problems. People complain of gastric with its reflex symptoms. This has to do with diet, lack of exercise and being overweight," Dr Maruthachalam said.

"Obesity is a very common problem in young adults and children as well. I have seen about 25 patients since my visit three days ago. I think over the period of the next six weeks, I will be able to see at least 300 patients."

Dr Maruthachalams also a bariatric surgeon, said the surgery was performed for people suffering from obesity.

"This surgery is available for people who are not able to lose weight despite trying dieting and exercising," he said.

He mentioned that patients now in the country could look forward to a safer and easier way of surgery.
