Bus stand repairs

PRIME Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has given a directive to Suva City Council (SCC) to ensure something was done about shelters built within the greater Suva area that were falling apart.

While responding to a question raised during a talanoa session at the Suva bus stand on Thursday, Mr Bainimarama told SCC chief executive officer Bijay Chand that maybe the contractors hired by the council were not doing a "good" job.

The structures in question were the terminals at the Suva bus stand and the new shelters built beside the market area for vendors.

"Make sure something is done and there is also a complain about the structures here that they are coming apart slowly. Something needs to be done here, maybe the contractors are not doing a good enough job," Mr Bainimarama said.

He made the comments after Bilo settlement resident Eparama Vata raised concerns about the leaking roofs at the bus station and the width of terminal 3 at the Suva bus stand.

Mr Vata said whenever it rained, commuters who shared terminal 3 were not spared by the rain.

Mr Chand said SCC was in its final stages of finalising a plan for the renovation of the Suva bus stand.

"As far as the Suva bus station is concerned, we are in the final planning stages of carrying out repairs to the bus station, we are aware that it is leaking and we have in our capital projects for this year to carry out repairs in the bus station," Mr Chand said.

To which the PM asked what was the timeframe for repair works to begin, Mr Chand told Mr Bainimarama that repair works would be done in six months.

"That's going to happen because the complaint here is the bus stand structure. When it rains, everybody under it gets wet so you need to do something about it," the PM said.
