Fish market plans

Saturday, January 13, 2018

FISH sellers in the Capital City can expect a much improved fish market later this year, says Suva City Council CEO Bijay Chand.

Mr Chand made the comments after he was questioned by Fish Vendors Association president Jone Waqatuinayau on the progress of a proper facility for those who sold fish.

Mr Waqatuinayau raised this issue during a talanoa session with the Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama after the opening of the Stinson Pde and Vatuwaqa bridges on Thursday.

Mr Chand said the construction of an airconditioned fish market was in the pipeline and work was to take place in six months.

"As I have said in the new development, the redevelopment of the market will have an airconditioned fish market altogether, so that is something we will be looking forward to."

Mr Chand said the council was also aware of the overcrowding issue faced by fish sellers every weekend.

He said the council was working on proposing to relocate the fish market to an area that could accommodate more fish sellers.

He said the idea of expanding the area of the current fish market was unrealistic because of space issues.

"So we cannot expand inside, but what we can do is go out, so this is something we are proposing in the new development."

"This is so that we can accommodate the fish market on the ground floor, so it's easy for all these vendors to sell their produce.

He said they are also holding talks with the Water Authority of Fiji in trying to control the stench in the area.

"As for now, we will do some temporary fix up, as we try correct the entire overflow from the fish market into the sewer system, at the moment we don't have any connection to the sewer line, so we will be working with WAF to get a connection done and the smell problem will be over," he said.
