Company heeds call to assist

ABOUT 600 children from underprivileged families will be assisted by the Save the Children Fiji for the new academic year.

In its bid to assist these children, the organisation called on corporate bodies for assistance and yesterday, Vinod Patel and Co Ltd was one of the many corporate bodies fulfilling its social corporate responsibility.

Save the Children Fiji CEO Iris Low-McKenzie said the organisation was fortunate to have the helping hands of all Vinod Patel's customers and staff members giving to a worthy cause.

"We have received applications from across the country and we are assisting children from families who have a combined income of $140 weekly," Mrs Low-McKenzie said.

She said the organisation, after receiving applications, concluded there were 600 genuine cases that needed assistance.

Save the Children Fiji's communications and marketing manager Vijay Krishna said the assistance towards a child was equivalent to $30 for a primary school student and $60 for a secondary school student.

"We had received requests for assistance for children as young as preschool age, so we also prepared packages for children in kindy," Mr Krishna said.

He said most applications were from those in Hart homes, single mothers, grandparents looking after their grandchildren and wives of those incarcerated.

"But it's good that through their situations, they are still prioritising education and are coming out openly about their situation," Mr Krishna said.

"We are assisting these children because we strongly believe that every child has the right to education."
