Ministry clarifies seasonal work eligibility

PEOPLE from all 14 provinces are considered for seasonal work in New Zealand and Australia, says Ministry of Labour, Industrial Relations and Employment deputy secretary Vilimone Baledrokadroka.

Mr Baledrokadroka highlighted this in response to queries from youths in Ba during the draft National Employment Policy consultations on Thursday.

Youth representative Rupeni Nauci questioned whether people from all provinces were considered when the ministry sent workers overseas.

Mr Baledrokadroka said employment opportunities were fairly distributed.

"There are times when employers want to recruit from a locality, but we try to distribute this to all the provinces," he said.

"We have to look at what the demand is like from the employers in New Zealand and Australia."

Mr Baledrokadroka said young people were encouraged to register at the National Employment Centre (NEC).

The consultation was also organised in Tavua and Rakiraki yesterday.
