Plans for solar college 'intact'

PLANS for the Barefoot College in Nadogo, Macuata, remain intact, says Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa.

And the commitment from the Government of India to support this project, she said, was still binding.

Mrs Vuniwaqa said the documents would soon be submitted to Cabinet.

"Government is doing a scoping exercise on the proposed building to determine costing," she said.

"Once that's done a paper will be put together for Cabinet's consideration seeking Cabinet's approval for the establishment of the school at the determined costing for the next fiscal year. Commitment by the Government of India through Barefoot College of India to support us in this venture still stands."

Mrs Vuniwaqa said Government anticipated that close collaboration and consultations between the two parties would continue throughout the process.

Last year, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama commissioned the site at Nadogo. The proposed Barefoot College will train women to become solar engineers.

In 2012, Government sent 10 women from Dama, Waikubukubu on Viti Levu, Nakorovou, Vunidogoloa from the North and Naioti in Kadavu to India.

These women were trained as solar engineers and their knowledge would be used at the proposed Barefoot College and they have already worked on solar systems in their respective villages.

In 2015, another five women were sent to India for similar training, three from Nadogo in Macuata and two from Kadavu.
