Plea for better road

VILLAGERS of Nasealevu in Macuata have raised concern over the poor road that restricted them from accessing bus services to their village.

Villager Aliposo Vularomo said they raised their concerns with Fiji Roads Authority many times before, but nothing had been done.

"It's like no one cares any more," he said.

A total of 500 people live at Nasealevu Village and more than 20 children attend schools in Labasa Town.

Mr Vularomo said the roads had been badly damaged and during inclement weather, they would have to stay home because half the road would be flooded.

"We need bridges as well because most of us travel to Labasa Town for work," he said.

"This poor road has been a thing of the past and just a few years back the Fiji Roads Authority constructed footpaths so vehicles could go right up to our village, but now those footpaths are all damaged because it was poorly constructed in the first place."

Mr Vularomo said they had always wanted Government officials to visit their village, but there was no chance.

Fiji Roads Authority CEO Jonathan Moore said the section of road was not FRA legal road reserve and had been identified by the Commissioner's Office as a "rural road upgrade" project to bring the access up to a road standard. "This project will go to tender in mid-February," he said.

Mr Moore said the FRA repaired the access road in June and July last year to keep it safely accessible from Savusavuitaga intersection to Vuiraqilai and Nasealevu.

"One of the major concerns that was highlighted by the FRA engineers to the people of Nasealevu was on the logging operations from Nasealevu to Labasa," he said.

"This is an access road, not capable of withstanding heavy commercial vehicles."
