Fiji health ministry notes drop in amputations

Friday, January 12, 2018

Update: 5:44PM THE number of amputations conducted in Fiji dropped significantly last year - with 587 amputations recorded in 2017 compared with 791 in 2016.

However, at the launch of the Courts and Sports World Health and Fitness Program in Suva today, Minister for Health and Medical Services Rosy Akbar said there were still concerns about the large and escalating burden of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) not just from the public health perspective but also economically.

She said the 587 amputations last year referred to the amputations that resulted from diabetes, injury and road accidents to name a few.

"With the beginning of a new year, it's never too late to start to make health and fitness as our New Year resolutions," Ms Akbar said.

"Good health is the choice we make for our families while having a robust health system is important, the choices you make and the way you choose to live your lives and raise your children are equally important."
