2017 Census: Tabuya queries absence of ethnic figures

Friday, January 12, 2018

Update: 5:13PM WHILE the 2017 census was conducted professionally and its results fair, a politician and former head of a party questions why key information is being withheld.

Lynda Tabuya, the former head of the People's Democratic Party, said information like the ethnic distribution of the population was important to election preparations.

"I do not understand why key information is being withheld such as the ethnic distribution of the population," Ms Tabuya said.

"These details are vital for any election preparation and it is safe to assume that it is only available to the government of the day who will have an unfair advantage over other political parties in their preparations for the 2018 general elections."

Ms Tabuya was of the view the census was handled professionally by bureau staff and said the use of patented software and mobile devices to collect data "provided a more transparent method of collecting Census information".

She said that meant less data discrepancies but Ms Tabuya said the public must get all the details of the 2017 count.

Calling for a release to the public of detailed information, including the ethnic make-up of the country, Ms Tabuya said the results had been very selectively released so far.

She said its analysis was necessary.

"This information must be released to the public as soon as possible.

"The results presented are selective and cherry picking when it should be looked at in its entirety and put in context. Time should be taken to actually analyse the data in more detail."
