Dee's 80:20 rule

Losalini Vuki
Friday, January 12, 2018

DEE McLean believes people should live by the 80:20 rule — 80 per cent of the time eat a healthy diet based on fresh fruit/vegetables and salad plus a portion of protein and 20 per cent (that is, less often) on treat items.

As human beings, she said we are not meant to be idle but to move and exercise even if it's just going for a half an hour walk per day.

"As we get older it's important to maintain our muscle mass too as muscles support our joints, ligaments and tendons, so lifting some weights at the gym helps with this," said Mrs McLean.

"Another thing to watch is your daily calorie intake. The calories (or energy we get from food) needed by our bodies varies depending on our gender, weight and how active we are but as a general rule women should aim for 1800 calories per day and men around 2300 to maintain current weight. We need less food as we get older as our muscle mass tends to decrease and our metabolism slows and less food than this when we want to lose weight."

Mrs McLean is a certified personal trainer and chartered management accountant.

She loves Fiji and has lived here for about eight years.
