Top up woes for villagers

ACCESSING services to top up eticketing cards has been difficult for about 300 villagers of Wailevu District in Cakaudrove since the eTransport system was introduced last August.

The situation has forced them to share eTransport cards and assist the elderly who usually forget to top up their cards. The affected villagers of Laucala, Naiqaqi, Valeni and surrounding settlements have had no option but to top up cards in Savusavu Town.

Laucala Village headman Nomani Qolikoro said villagers faced this problem since the introduction of the new system.

"It's really difficult for us because we have to travel to Savusavu Town to top up our cards and town is about two hours bus ride from the village," he said.

"There is no top-up machine in this area and sometimes, those who don't have enough money in their cards have to beg the drivers to just get into the bus. "It's not easy going through this, but we have helped one another over the past months by sharing cards and lending it to those who don't have enough money in their cards."

Mr Qolikoro said they discussed this issue in village and district meetings and had alerted authorities asking for assistance, but the situation had not changed.
