Adhere to rules, says FEO

The Fijian Elections Office is reminding all political party candidates and their workers to adhere to the Electoral Act 2014, the Political Parties (registration, conduct, funding and disclosures) Act, and the code of conduct.

Supervisor of Elections Mohammed Saneem said as Fiji geared up for the 2018 General Election, members of the public would witness increased political campaign activities around the country.

"There will be increased mobilisation of political figures as well as seminars and related events by political parties and their nominees," Mr Saneem said.

"The Electoral Act has very specific rules on campaign, and I urge all political parties and political party agents, candidate agents to adhere to the rules.

"There is a complaints mechanism that the Fijian Elections Office had established and any Fijian who is subjected to any unfair campaign practice may complain to the Fijian Elections Office whereby we will then intervene for our own investigations."

Mr Saneem said the FEO received complaints in the past and dealt with them adequately.

"It is not a matter for us to publicise on all the complaints that we receive, this is in good faith," he said.

"We dealt with general types of complaints that come to us, there was one complaint that we attended to, it was then taken to court and was dealt with."
