Women lucky as freak accident lands car in river

THREE women counted their lucky stars after a car veered off Nokonoko Rd, Laucala Beach Estate, Nasinu, and landed in the Samabula River near the Bailey bridge yesterday.

The three were the first to help the injured driver.

Anaseini Ravesi, 51, of Nadera, counted herself lucky to have been spared in the accident. Ms Ravesi was sitting outside her stall selling cassava, cabbage and other root crops and had her earphones on when the car veered off the road.

She said it was like watching a movie.

"I can still see how the car came off the road and into the river," she said.

"I had never experienced this in my life and I just thank the Lord for his protection."

Other witnesses, Keasi Radovu, 41, and Adi Ema Qereitoga, 40, ran to the car in the river to help the victim.

The three women claim the car that landed in the river was hit by another vehicle heading towards Suva.

Ms Radovu said at the time of the incident, there were no men around to help the victim.

She said they had no option, but to help the injured driver.

"We wasted no time and jumped into the river to help the driver. Unfortunately, the door was locked.

"The driver opened the window from inside and by then, the boys driving across came to help before the police officers arrived."

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed the incident yesterday and said the driver was treated at the Valelevu Health Centre.
