Permit 'in due time'

FOUR days away from the proposed march planned to highlight the ongoing plight of the 250 Air Terminal Services workers, Police Commissioner Brigadier General Sitiveni Qiliho said police would issue the march permit when the time was right.

Brig-Gen Qiliho said the Fiji Police Force had other important issues of national security that it needed to deal with and it needed to verify other information before issuing the march permit.

"The ATS issue is best handled by the ministry responsible for that," Brig-Gen Qiliho said.

"We have other important issues of national security that we are dealing with. In regards to the march, they have applied for their permit, which we will issue. We will issue it in due time."

On the 15th day of the impasse between ATS workers and its management, Fiji Trades Union Congress national secretary Felix Anthony said it would call on a national strike if the ATS issue was not resolved soon.

With today marking the 25th day of the impasse, ATS workers are still picketing outside the company's Nadi headquarters, claiming they have been locked out of their workplace.

The Ministry of Labour has declared it an illegal strike by ATS workers who left their jobs to attend an emergency meeting held on December 16, last year

"There are a few issues we need to confirm," Brig-Gen Qiliho said.

"I know Felix (Anthony) has been saying he is waiting for it, his job is to apply and our job is to issue it to him when the time is right."

Meanwhile, Mr Anthony said they had applied for the permit on January 2 and were expecting a response from police today. The march, scheduled for January 13, is expected to take place in Nadi.
