A new research book by Dr Sakul Kundra, assistant professor in history at the Fiji National University's College of Humanities and Education, was successfully published in Fiji last month.

Titled, Insights of Mughal India: Exploring the Perceptions of French Travellers and Adventurers In Northern India during Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries, the book was published at the University of the South Pacific's press.

FNU vice-chancellor Professor Nigel Healey said the book was important because it analysed historical written accounts of French travellers to India in the 17th and 18th centuries to understand the way the French viewed politics and economics of Indian society.

"It provides fascinating and thoroughly researched insights into the way India was perceived by Europeans during this critical period in world history," Prof Healey said.

"The book uses these written travelogues to explore five broad themes.

"The actual accounts of their travels and the backgrounds of the travellers themselves; the role of the travellers as agents, merchants and mercenaries; the travellers' assessments and understanding of the political landscape of India; their attitude to gender relations at a time when widow burning in India was still practised; and their view of Indian education and beliefs at a time when Europe was undergoing a period of rapid scientific advance during the so-called 'Age of Enlightenment'."

Yogesh Karan, permanent secretary at the Office of the Prime, said Dr Kundra's contribution highlighted thematic issues in a fascinating finding about India as perceived by Europeans.

"The author's work is an incredible and delightful guide for researchers and university and I recommend this to anyone, it is a must-read book," he said.
